Katy Perry..........................Katy Perry original name Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson, (born October 25 1984 Santa Barbara California U.S.) American pop singer who gained fame for a string of anthemic and often sexually suggestive hit songs as well as for a playfully cartoonish sense of style. Perry's initial attempts to be a star in the mainstream were unsuccessful. Perry was signed by two different record labels but dropped before any of her material had been published. In 2007, however, Capitol Records put out Perry's EP Ur So Gay which attracted some attention to its playful title track. She made a greater splash several months later with the song I kissed a Girl an assertive ode to the desire for sexual pleasure accompanied by a hard-edged electro-pop beat. It quickly sparked controversy when some critics accused the song for encouraging sexual relations between gays and lesbians and others charged that the sexually explicit scene the song depicted sparked male fantasies of female sexuality. I Kissed a Girl's blend of titillation, polished melody and an enthralling chorus made its popularity to reach the top 10 across a range of countries. This helped her sell more albums including one of the Boys (2007). The album's second track Hot N Cold also proving to be a hit, the album the songs Perry wrote herself eventually registered greater than three million copies within the United States.
